Veteran coach Jack Crowe leads JSU to huge victory

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Jack Crowe has been coaching football for 40 years, but even he was at a loss to describe how Jacksonville State pulled off the unthinkable with a 49-48 double-overtime victory over Mississippi on Saturday.

"I don't believe you could repeat the circumstances again in a hundred years," Crowe said.

With Hampton out, Robinson shines for No. 9 Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The anticipation for Iowa sophomore running back Jewel Hampton's return from knee surgery and a one-game suspension has reached a fevered pitch in Iowa City.

Meanwhile, Adam Robinson keeps moving the chains.

Robinson, an unheralded sophomore from Des Moines, rushed for 109 yards and three first-half touchdowns on Saturday as the ninth-ranked Hawkeyes overwhelmed Eastern Illinois 37-7.

Hampton will finally be back for next week's home game with rival Iowa State, and many believe he'll give the Hawkeyes a much-needed home threat out of the backfield.

Navy-Maryland: In-state rivalry slow to catch on

BALTIMORE (AP) — Navy and Maryland play Monday for the Crab Bowl trophy, a shiny piece of hardware that will probably gather dust for years before these rivals face each other again.

The schools are located 28 miles apart, yet this is only the second meeting in the last 45 years between the two most prominent football teams in Maryland.

It's an intriguing matchup: The Midshipmen are coming off a 10-win season and on the cusp of becoming a Top 25 team, and the Terrapins are determined to bounce back from last year's 2-10 record.

When they meet again is anyone's guess, but the city of Baltimore, the staff of the Baltimore Ravens and officials at both schools are working to make it happen at least every three years.

Wyoming opens up aerial attack against S. Utah

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) — It took a season, but it appears Wyoming's new spread offense has lifted off.

Despite being sacked three times by a Southern Utah defense that threw blitz after blitz at him, Cowboys quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels burned the Thunderbirds with 319 passing yards and three touchdown passes in a 28-20 win Saturday night.

Carta-Samuels, who completed 26 of 32 passes with an interception, had touchdown passes of 39 and 69 yards to Zach Bolger and 9 yards to Mazi Ogbonna.

Southern Utah coach Ed Lamb had nothing but praise for Carta-Samuels.

"He did a great job," Lamb said.

Meyer: Gators have ‘long way to go’ after opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida coach Urban Meyer expected some growing pains.

After all, the fourth-ranked Gators entered the post-Tim Tebow era with four new assistant coaches, a new quarterback, a patchwork offensive line, inexperienced receivers and a revamped defense.

But Meyer certainly didn't envision what happened Saturday against five-touchdown underdog Miami (Ohio).

Florida fumbled early and often, botched several snaps, muffed two exchanges, shanked a punt, missed a field goal and an extra point, and watched way too many plays go nowhere.

The Gators pulled away down the stretch thanks to two late touchdowns, including a fluky score in the closing minutes, but the 34-12 victory left plenty of cause for concern.

Meyer says, "We've got a long way to go."
