NCAA talks with 2 Clemson football players

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips says the NCAA was on the Tigers' campus this week to talk with two members of the football team.

Phillips issued a statement Friday but did say what the inquiry was about.

Illini player enters jail after theft plea

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — University of Illinois football player Walter Aikens has started serving a two-week jail sentence after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor theft charge.

Champaign County officials say the 19-year-old Aikens started serving the sentence Thursday.

Aikens admitted to possessing a computer stolen from a dorm after initially pleading not guilty following his April 21 arrest.

Aikens is a sophomore defensive back from Charlotte, N.C. He was expected to contend for a starting safety spot before his arrest

Illini coach Ron Zook said Friday that Aikens remains suspended from the team.

Texas adds Cantu to roster, demotes Davis again

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Texas Rangers have added newly acquired infielder Jorge Cantu to their 25-man roster.

Texas made the move Friday, a day after getting Cantu in a trade with the Florida Marlins and before the start of a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels.

First baseman Chris Davis was sent back to Triple-A Oklahoma City for the second time this season.

Davis hit .189 (10 for 53) with two RBIs in 16 games since being recalled July 9, when Texas traded rookie first baseman Justin Smoak to Seattle to get left-hander Cliff Lee.

New York Red Bulls waive F John Wolyniec

SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) — Thierry Henry is officially on the New York Red Bulls' roster.

The Red Bulls created a space on their roster for the French striker on Friday by waiving veteran forward John Wolyniec.

Henry, who was signed two weeks ago, will play in his first MLS game on Saturday night when the Red Bulls face the Dynamo in Houston.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Billy Loes, who pitched on three pennant-winning Brooklyn Dodgers teams in the 1950s and was an AL All-Star in 1957, has died.

Stallworth rebuilds life after manslaughter plea

WESTMINSTER, Md. (AP) — Donte' Stallworth is playing professional football again for the first time since December 2008.

The new Baltimore Ravens wide receiver donned shoulder pads on Friday, his first action since pleading guilty to DUI manslaughter last year.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Stallworth says that he intends to "move forward" and "try to continue my life as a I know it."

Indians place RHP Talbot on DL with back strain

TORONTO (AP) — The Cleveland Indians placed right-hander Mitch Talbot on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain Friday and optioned right-hander Jess Todd to Triple-A Columbus.

Cleveland also recalled right-hander Jensen Lewis and purchased the contract of righty Justin Germano from Columbus.

Talbot, who left in the third inning of Thursday's 11-4 loss to New York, is 8-9 with a 4.09 ERA in 20 starts, while Todd had no record and a 7.50 ERA in five games since being promoted from Triple-A on July 19.

Lewis has had three prior stints with the Indians this season, going 2-2 with a 4.18 ERA in 22 relief appearances.

Germano, signed as a minor league free agent on March 4 after pitching in Japan last season, has split the season between Double-A Akron and Columbus, going 5-3 with a 3.38 ERA and one save in 24 games, including seven starts.

Rice to start camp on PUP list

MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings receiver Sidney Rice and cornerback Cedric Griffin are starting training camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Rice has a lingering hip injury that first surfaced during the Vikings' run to the NFC title game in January.
